Knee Arthrodesis


Indications

  1. painful ankylosis after infection or trauma
  2. neuropathic arthropathy
  3. tumor resection
  4. salvage for failed TKA (most common)
  5. loss of extensor mechanism



Optimal Position

  • 5-8° valgus
  • 0-10° of external rotation (match other leg)
  • 0-15° of flexion



Techniques
intramedullary rod fixation is preferred technique -- union rates of 100%
external fixation--union rate of 38%
